Shadrende 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 Vista isn't bad, its different. XP had the same issues when it first came out. XP that everyone knows and loves REALLY started around SP1 and was uber by SP2 (SP3 is kidna lame but w/e.) It looks great, has annoying defaults, but has DX10, more control over security, and from what I've seen better networking.

emerald 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 @ Shad: But we would have said the same thing about XP back then, Vista just doesnt seem the way to go until all the bugs and shit is sorted out.
Ecthelion 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 @ Shad: But we would have said the same thing about XP back then, Vista just doesnt seem the way to go until all the bugs and shit is sorted out. It's SIGNIFIGANTLY better then it used to be with SP1, and I'm excited about the networkability and reconstructability of the OS. Like I can go into XP's registry, and in 20s give you a completely wothless hunk of computing. If I were to do that same thing to a vista machine it would attempt to boot, fail, rebuild the registry, and boot up just fine. It will also restore system files that have been lost throught the inane way windows constantly writes to the hard disk. It's really a quantum leap for Microsoft in terms of an operating system. But, and there's always going to be one, after being in development for close to a decade I have higher expectations. I've often said this reminds me of the switch from 98 to XP, b/c it's the same. But with the rampant device driver problems that I run into daily, and to be honest XP can do everything I want it to, Look just as good (gogo vista themes!) and be more compatible with the majority of devices the Vista will be in the near future. Is Stick going to have problems? I doubt it as he's not a moron. But don't be surprised if some printers stop working, or the old drivers even cause BSODs. In time I'm sure it'll be amazing, but that's a little bit off.

Shadrende 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 MS extended the life cycle of XP for a little bit longer because they want to be sure vista is solid before they cut of XP support. Give it time, it will be fine. 4 years from now everyone will be like AMG EFF WINDOWS HOLOGRAM! Vista was so much better! I didn't know that about the reg rebuild Chris, that's pretty awesome

Lyssa 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 I have honestly, never heard 1 good thing about vista. The only upside, is the tabbed browsing is wicked. Tabbed browsing was not invented with Vista...

Gryph 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 Have you tried the search feature on the start menu? I love that feature of Vista... I start typing in the name of what I am looking for and it lists the programs that start with that phrase. Once you start using that, it is WAY faster than actually navigating the start menu. I've used Vista from day 1 and I love it.
Gryph 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 Also, if you use media center, Vista Ultimate media center works great when you hook it up to your XBox360. I listen to my XM Radio in my living room via the Vista Media center. No need to purchase an additional subscription or radio. There are lots of great features of Vista, but the average user just doesn't see them.
Gryph 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 If you have a large image repository... (READ: PORN) Windows Explorer also has a much nicer view when browsing your files. You can choose multiple sizes for your thumbnails. This really helps when managing a large photo repository.
Gryph 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 Have you ever wanted to change the volume of 1 specific application? (Maybe the sound of Arafelz scratching his beard? ) Vista lets you manage volume individually on an application level.

Gryph 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2008 When copying multiple files in XP... the process stops if there is a problem with one of the files. You would need to start the whole process again. In Vista... if the copy encounters an error it will let you know and keep copying everything else. That way you only need to fix the files it mentioned at the end. Very handy! I've used Vista from day 1 and I love it. Yea, I've been doing that through Spotlight on my Mac for years. It's about time that MS introduced an intelligent file indexing search engine. EDIT: And yes, the file copying of Vista is 100000000x better than it was/is on XP. Edited July 10, 2008 by Lyssa

Fatherpeteus 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2008 I recommend you go out and pick up the latest "PC Gamer" mag, and look at the current dream system and mid system they spec out in each issue. They list out the parts for a dream systems that's ~$4,000 (quad-core processor, dual video cards for $6-800, etc, etc), but the mid-range system is more like ~$1,000 with all of the parts that are still really nice but have come down in price. They also list a $500 "low-end" system that's still more powerful than what I'm using - lol So yeah, you might be able to get a great system for $1,000 by just taking their mid-range parts list to Canada Computers and making it yourself or paying a more-geek-minded friend with diet Cokes.
