Hvilelos 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 if you plan on playing games you should probably get rid of that steaming pile of a video card other than that the price is right
Garnok 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 My only worry is the light video card and Vista. If you can get that changed to XP it would be better and a little bit stronger video card would be nice but that is something that can be upgraded later. Vanin 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 I'm always of the mindset that if you want a new computer it should last you a while. I would save some money and try to get the best (or close to it) that you can get at the moment, that way you're set for a while. Otherwise these small jumps will continue into infinity and you really won't get the bargain you originally thought you did.
ilDuce 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 That's not a bad setup, given the price. However, it would be very much worth your money to upgrade the video card. When doing so, pay less attention to the actual amount of memorty built into the card, and more on the speed of said memory. For example, 512MB of DDR is definitely not better than 128MB of DDR3. Alot of sales people will push the higher numbers on you, as if you're getting more bang for your buck, when in fact, you're not. Same holds true for your system memory. The 667Mhz RAM is a bit out dated at this point. There are definitely faster options, and like Vanin said, it would probably be wise to get the best that you can afford at this point, to avoid needing upgrades in the near future. Garnok 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 Soma, get the system but do not upgrade the video card, take their default card. That is a part that you can save up for and replace a little while down the road. You should be able to get a good card for somewhere between $150 and $200. If I understand Windows licensing correctly, by getting Vista you will be licensed to use XP instead. I believe the license will only be for XP Home though and not Pro. I'm sure Gryph can hook you up on software though.
Noreaster 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 The upgrade to 800Mhz Ram is only 20 bucks, so I can do that. I think that this graphics card will start out perform the one I'm currently using (which I can't remember right now but I can update at home). If the one I bought a little while ago is better, I can just swap, and worry about it in the future. Thanks guys!
Noreaster 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 Oh, and Garnok, are you saying I could use the Vista Activation code for an XP version? Or should I just stick with Vista and deal with it.
Garnok 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 I was kind of wrong, the Vista Business and Ultimate editions are allowed to downgrade to XP Pro but the Home and Home Premium editions of Vista are not allowed to downgrade. Microsoft is going to shove Vista down our throats at some point so I guess you might as well use it and get used to it :/
Lyssa 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 (edited) I got a new t61 at work and re-loaded the Vista Business license that came with it. I have to say, I like Vista a lot more than I thought I would. The card in that computer should run WoW just fine as long as you aren't using a large monitor with a high resolution. That being said, if you can spare $90 to upgrade to the 8800GT and play more graphically-intensive games, go for it. The 8800GT is an awesome card at a great price point. If you can't scrounge up the extra $90, than save up for a few months and buy one for like $200-$230 down the road. Personally I'd find the $90 to upgrade now and save yourself a bunch of money. I agree, on all fronts. Spending the $90 now, if you can spare it, will indeed save you a bundle down the road, should you choose to replace it later. However, if you can not, that card will certainly get you by in WoW. As for Vista, I installed it on my laptop that I build a few months back, and haven't had any issues with it. In fact, there are a few features of it that I'm enjoying. I really don't see a performance difference between it and XP Pro. Although, I am running Vista Home BASIC, because I read a while back that the Ultimate edition has a lot of "Frilly" crap included that is either A. Pointless, or B. A memory hog.
