Computer knowledge.

I'm not good with computers, software or hardware wise. I would love to know and understand more, and we have lots of skilled computer guys in the guild. SO after putting 2+2 together I decided to ask here to how you guys would teach a newbie to computers or how you would reccomend learning about them. Pretty much start me with the basic basics, I know some stuff, but it's best to assume I know nothing ( Fill in joke from Shad here) and need to learn it all fast ( Fill in Tom's mom joke here). Be it websites, or books, or just going over basics examples or suggesting to take apart a computer and poking around, anything that will help. Thanks for any info.

i learned everything i know from books and wikipedia, also just being around computers and having to fix them. if you hear a pc term and you are like, wtf mate? search it on wiki and then follow the limitless amount of links that are in the explanation. A+ books are a good starting point since they assume you know nothing about computers. Might wanna pick your area though, hardware or software. They are both very vast fields and have extensive content. I'm into hardware and slowly leaning into network structuring and system administering.

****EDIT******

There also is no such thing as learning fast. I thought i could take both A+ exams in a matter of 2 weeks with little study. It took me about 2-3 months of constant study, i didnt get to play any games and rarely got to do anything but study, to be able to successfully pass both exams.

well for the most part i know how to do stuff inside computers but not outside.. its like being a psychologist instead of a doctor! although if i were a doctor, i would suggest getting a screwdriver and unscrewing all the screws and screwin around with all the innards. its interesting to see what connects to what. arm bone connected to the...... elbone!

i'm somewhat familiar with css & building sites and whatnot, so if you're into that i could potentially help you out! my metaphor for this is like the alien codes.. you write it down and it builds the ship! the aeroship!

in any case.... http://www.w3schools.com/ is a good website to poke around at; they have lots of tutorials and references and the like.

....... its 3am, so please excuse any unnecessaries in this post.

My advice: Find a spare comp; Break it, fix it, wash, rinse, repeat.

(No, I'm not joking...That is the short story of how I eventually managed to get a job running a region of a major Telco, with a 10,000+ user-base).

Seat time. Seat time. Seat time.

I hardly do anything to typical or standard way. Never really read any books, just simple exposure and 'seat time' with it. I picked up networking binary in about 2 hours, hehe (thats literally the 1001000101111 of computer talk).

Theres really so much of it, unless you have something specific you want to learn, its hard to find a starting point.
