My first toon was a warrior and pretty much did the same noob things as you. I had armor of the whale because it had a higher armor rating, used pots to heal myself because I didn't know about food and when I first went into Ashenvale (PvP flagged) I was constantly looking up at the trees for horde to come down. I remember one time seeing something (a bird) flying high above and thinking "Oh shit, he's on me". So I hid behind a tree and shadowmelded a second. Kind of funny how clueless I was, yet still won my first PvP battle vs a rogue trying to gank me. /flex I also remember a guildie letting me borrow 50 silver when I was about level 5. I was so grateful and felt so rich since I was able to buy all the vendor armor/weapons. Oh and Eni, I remember quite a few people right clicking mobs constantly to attack them.. not knowing about auto attack. So you're not the only one.
