oh come on beorn, you've never thought about what the hell it was like "before" the universe existed? I think its neat people are trying to figure it out. :)

OK, so if the universe is expanding in all directions where is the center? surely we must know that to know it is all expanding....... The bounce, bang theory makes me wonder too,.... if you bounce something it eventually stops bouncing. so if the universe bounced outward and will bounce in again at some point, what is to keep that cycle from eventually dying out? If there are other universes at the edge of ours, what is to keep it from pulling part of ours into it? hmmm huh? well? I want answers now damint! LOL Very interesting read though. Until science can find a definate begining and estimate a definate end to everything the ID creationists will always have a foot to stand on. And they should.

Wow, I can't believe I read the entire article and all of the responses v_v.

It was an interesting read, and I guess people are are getting the math closer support some theories. But it doesn't really *answer* a whole lot, it just pushes the timeline back more, if the universe was created as part of some cycle of universes, how did the cycle start? How does something come of nothing? *brain freeze*

The only thing I disliked was the anti-religion responses the article brought out in some of the comments following the article. The 'creationists' who try to use faith mixed with psuedo-science to try and disprove scientifc fact are a very small minority, and shouldn't be lumped in with the vast majority who can allow for science and religion to coexist.

I saw the word "astronomy" in the link, and I decided I couldn't click it.

i <3 this stuff

i'm a complete physics geek <.<

oh and rdy to answer ur question about knowing where the centre of the universe is; we don't know, but we know it's expanding because of red shift (i'm a little rusty but i think it's also known as the doplar effect? )

Basically, some guy a rlly long time ago realised that when he looked through a special lense, nething that was moving away from him appeared red; he put that lense in a telescope and pointed it out at the stars, and everything was red. If everything is red, it must ALL be moving away from us, and the only way that can happen (since we arn't the centre of the universe) is that the universe itself is expanding and there is more room for everything to spread out.

ooo! ooo! can i explain how they found the speed of light next? or what makes a laser different from a flashlight? like i said, physics geek =D

If this interests you, I'd recommend picking up Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe". One of the better books I've read about the emerging "Theory of Everything." He doesn't over complicate or attempt to over simplify, it's a great read if you're science or math minded, (read: nerd), like I am.

It could very well be, Krotas, that everything just moving away from YOU.

That guys name, Kortas, was Edwin Hubble. There's something named after him in earth orbit, and no it's not shad's mom.

Yes the Doppler Effect and Red Shift are essentially the same thing. If you're not familiar, a good example of the Doppler Shift is when your standing still, and a car passes you by. The sound is more high pitched as the car travels closer to you, and as it's moving away the pitch lowers. Sound, like light, is a wave. This raising of the pitch is the wave compressing as the car moves closer to you; the lowering is the elongation of the wave as it moves farther away from you. Red light is a has a very long wavelength, so by the previous example when you see the spectrum of something and the color is predominantly red, it's moving away from you (in celestial terms at least, this is a little harder to use on earth).

If you liked that read, you should check out some of the work that's being done on M-Theory. Or for the out of date nerds in the group, the theory previously known as string.

The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge.
In this I believe. Edited by Ecthelion

omg i <3 string theory

i refuse to call it "M" theory... sad as it may be i forget what it implies if i call it that, lol

u know it just occured to me the tunnel project they r doing to test string theory is probably getting close to completion... They are going to accelerate a single hydrogen atom to what essentially adds up to a few billion times faster than the speed your car moves at, in a tunnel several miles long, and make it hit another atom; if string theory is correct when the atoms collide some of their mass will transfer into a parallel universe, and "hopefully" it will leave behind some detectable radiation so we know it happened.

If we can prove string is correct, we're getting close to unravelling the greatest mysteries in the universe.. well... our universe... and all 11 dimensions ^_-

From what I remember the timeline should be January 2009 they can do the first firing, that is if they are still on time target from when I last heard about it a year ago.

Yes, from what the "experts" say there is no center it is all expaning. BUT, problem becomes with the big bang theory or big bounce, either way that had to start somewhere, thus there has to be a center. Now it is possible that with every part expanding, our math hasn't been able to figure out where due to expanding spots colliding with other spots it would seem to move the center. Combine that with the way as Etc said the optical (for lack of a better term) illusion seen, that the center is no longer definable. Everything has to have a start or finish of some sort, and we are just unable to comprehend at this time in our existance what or where that may be. The creation of matter/life/ whatever you want to call it is about the only thing we can't find a beginning or end to.

EDIT: BTW I love these kind of discussions.....
