Well, I don't know much about AMD processors, or motherboards so I can't advise you on that.

I can tell you this, however. It doesn't look like it comes with a video card, or CD/DVD drives so you will need to purchase and install those. Also, you might want to pick up another 512MB RAM chip which should cost at most $80.

You should also be careful when buying from Tiger Direct. I heard some bad things about them, including that they have a nice long list at the BBB.

My only concern with that package is that is does not have the option of using a PCIE Video card. You're stuck with AGP. That means you will probably be unable to upgrade your video card as time goes by. (most companies are starting to cut back on their AGP offerings.)

When I get a sec, I'll try to look around and give you my recommendation.

aye, as siege mentions, there is no cd/dvd drive. nor a video card, and, well for that much you should be able to get at least a decent option for both of those. Not that i really like dell, but you could probably pick up a base model, and toss in some extra ram for about the same price. So, i would be skeptical about that one. oh, and the tower is oooogly.

Prime, Dell does not have any systems in the correct price range and if they did it would probably been Celerons.

The good news is that HP has some decent PIV and AMD systems that I think will do the job and are in the right price range. Go check them out Skee and if you got any questions, just keep the thread going wink.gif

thats an awesome price... 400$ for a AMD 64 at 2.4 is not bad at all. gigabyte is a good board too. and it will only cost you about 60$ to upgrade the memory to a 1024....PC 3200DDR is easy to get anywhere too.

Its not BRAD NEW, but it will run this game well, and the AGP slot is a plus imo, at least it has the agp slot. so all together, with the 400$ computer, 60 for the 512 in RAM and 100$ for a nice video card, it will be a great deal... IMO

edited to say O NO, you can upgrade there a stick of 512 for 40 bucks and that geforce 5500 for 50 -60 bucks... not bad, not bad :-)

It'll do, but you'll have to upgrade sooner than you like.

PCI Express will be completely replacing AGP VERY soon...

is that why when I do a search on pricewatch.com for AGP 4x I get 43 pages even though 8x has been out for what 3 or 4 years now. The price on PCI-X has not come down enough to make it worth it. I am not say if I had a chance to get an Asus SLI board and dual 7800s I wouldn't do it, I just feel the price is still too steep. I think AGI cards will still be made for at least 2 more years which is much longer than the lifespan of a computer in my house.

I fixed your quote Gryph so it looks the way you wanted it to, you forgot a [

I have seen people who love the SLI and I have seen people who have nothing but headachs from it. I like my rig and it works well for me. And who else in this guild can claim to have a computer case that flips everything upside down.

I have a tendency to go more than 2 years between total computer replacement. 2 years is usually the mark I make a much needed upgrade, and then another year or two later I usually make another purchase. However, I'll probably have this laptop through the next (and hopefully last) 2 years of undergrad.

I guess it depends on how often you replace, but I'd peg skee as not being a 2 year deal, I'm thinking he's more of a 4 year like I am, but if he's in fact doing the two year thing, then AGP will last, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a slim cut.

See, they're already doing the dual processor thing with vid cards, and they're stacking as much RAM as the cards can hold without melting the rest of the system (a card has to rely to a good degree on the system's cooling system). IMO it's sort of like the rest of the computer...the bottleneck is not the processing speed any more, but rather the rate at which information reaches it. In the case of the computer as a whole, this means the hard drive and whatever connection it has to the Internet. For a vid card, it's the interface with the motherboard, and any improvements made to the data rate there will have far superior results to an improvement made on the card itself.

My $0.04
