Dear god help me. I'm desperate.

I need help before I throw my computer out the window.

Alright. Here's the deal. I've been trying to get rid of this stupid virus for the past month or so. It's called Trojan.Vundo and it's annoying as hell. As far as I can tell the only real thing it does is make random ads pop up. I've attempted to get rid of it using Symantec Antivirus to no avail. I've attempted to use their special "Trojan.Vundo Removal Tool" and also run normal scans then attempted to edit the Windows registry to get rid of it. None of this has done anything. I said to myself "Alright, I'll just deal with the damn windows. It's not THAT big of a deal."

Now things are getting worse.

A few weeks ago my start menu quit working properly. I can still open the Start Menu itself, but I can't access the "All Programs" section. That means I pretty much either browse the C: drive or use the Run program to do whatever I need to do.

It gets better than that.

Last night I was letting my friend use my computer to burn some DvD's. I got an error saying I didn't have enough disk space. I said "Hmm, I'll just empty the Recycle Bin. Wait a second... the Recycle Bin is gone."

That's right. Gone. I followed all of the steps the Windows Help website listed. I tried to recreate it in the registry to no avail, I was unable to create a shortcut to it. Then I had an idea of my own. I'll use the Disk Cleanup option on my C: drive to do it!

So, success?

Wrong.

The Disk Cleanup option is missing from the properties tab on the C: drive. Interesting. I still know how to get around THIS problem though. I type Cleanmgr to pop it up, and hey. That's even better. The entire box is empty. I can't do anything using this utility now.

So, here I am. I've stretched my technical know-how to the limits, and I have absolutely no idea what to do next aside from backing up my 50 gigs of music/movies and formatting. That's a last resort for me. I would call Dell Tech Support but I don't have the patience to talk to some guy on the other side of the world who I can't understand and who knows absolutely nothing about computers aside from what the one in front of him is telling him to tell me.

So please. Someone help me if at all possible. Or laugh at my misfortune. I know you guys love to do that. =p

HV: I didn't literally mean laugh at my misfortune, but thanks for that.

Stang: Buy me a digital camera for Christmas and I'll see what I can do.

format and reinstall =D make sure to gather all your disks first and try to back up important screen shots if you can.

Just a tip: If you get somebody on Dell support that is from the far east, just ask for an American representative. I'm pretty certain they will transfer you. Once I got somebody in the US to talk to, it went very smoothly, and we had a pretty engaging convo about Doom 3 to boot.

Reformat doooooode. I don't even bother trying to salvage my install when things go bad like that. Just make sure you have a sytem partition and a data partion. Keep all your important stuff on the data partion then never fear reformatting again!

lern2format.

I mean seriouslly with all of those problems it is easier to accept that the illegal copy of the 40 year old virgin you got is going to be lost and you will have a working computer. Choice is yours.

lol, that's the debate that's running in my head. I have a friend who's going to let me transfer all of my movies/music to his comp so i can format without having to use DVD's as a backup or anything. Thanks for the advice everyone, it's appreciated.

you could check if you Sytem Restore is turned on (probably is) and if so turn it off (forever cause it's usueless IMHO)

then try the removal tool again (I would look if the Stinger removal tool will catch it cause it works in DOS before windows). It might be classed as spy ware and not a virus however so Stinger may not work.

What normally happens is that you remove the problem, reboot and the system restore is tricked into replacing the files on reboot for you...

worth a shot, before you format...

I always debug the comps in my office and Sileed's trick is the one that you should try first. Even under the best of circumstances you should always run a check with the system restore turned off . . . too much stuff hides in there.

P.S. This is the curse you put on yourself when you left us!! tongue.gif

I just leave System Restore turned off, I'm usually able to fix just about any problem that arises. This is the first time that something has gone massively wrong. My buddy is going to let me transfer my music and stuff to his comp while I format so I won't be losing all of my stuff. Thanks for the advice guys.

P.S. Haha Lyrin, very funny. Glad to know I'm cursed.

Seperate partitions are for noobs.  File server FTW!

do something at least, even if it may be noobish =D you need a data storage area that won't fall victim to a format.

I was gonna post this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic70074.html

It's a removal tool for a popup based virus. But, it sounds like you have more then just a pop-up virus on there and it has corrupted system files. At that point best thing to do is a low level format (that will wipe the boot sector too incase there is a virus there) Then do your normal format and install. I doubt with how corrupt windows sounds that you would be able to safely remove the virus. Not to mention that some viruses also change security settings and you would then be prone to getting viruses in the future without any action on your part.

Gryph: that link removed the virus I had called you about a friend having....
