Kopi 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 It's a tough call. Consider that people who are convicted of sex crimes are generally harassed by neighborhoods aware of them, and does it seem that far fetched that a specifically gay-friendly guild would suffer some sort of harassment? Personally I'd have just let it pan out.
Shoop 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 Well, guilds have to be formed on some basis, but I suppose Blizzard is setting the example that anything remotely politically sensitive is unacceptable. Is that in their terms of service?
Esteban 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 I think what they want is to prevent flaming in the boards and in game. Sadly to do this they have to beat on the small guy hence looking like tyranical bastards
Arriel 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 I can understand Blizz's pov. This is a virtual game world and RL issues and situations shouldnt be present here. There are children who play here ranging from 8 yrs old on up and they shouldnt be subjected to thos rl issues. Also ppl who are gay and such shouldnt be subjected to the abuse they would get from the younger or immature population if they advertised being in a gay guild or some orginization. The exposure of such would create alot of havoch in the gaming world. After all, ppl are getting harrassed just for speaking another language other than english. I see it all the time. Frost 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 There are children who play here ranging from 8 yrs old on up and they shouldnt be subjected to thos rl issues Aint this game rated T for teen? Dam those parents. Umm.. I was playing Doom which is rated 17+ when I was not even 4 years old.... I dont agree at all with Blizzard's statement. I mean, can't gay people can be ''proud'' of themselves? go in WoW and start shouting ''I AM GAY'' in IF... I think you will be pointed. They have rights -- and they have to be respected. Why won't we let them play this game like whey want? Everybody plays WoW the way they like -- with friends. Why wouldn't we let them play with such an organisation? I am pretty sure there are at least one guild in WoW with only girls or boys. Do we call this sexism? Nope, I personally never heard of such rabling. If you play video games, you should first be able to see what life looks like before playing. It is perfecly normal that such a guild was created in such a game. I agree with that and totally support them. About 8 years old childs playing WoW, it's Blizzard's and the child's parents's problems. Like, if you are 25 years old and decide to go see the most horrible movie at the cinema, it's your choice. But don't send letters to the cinema or the movie producers telling ''OMG YOUR MOVIE IS HORRIBLE''. You had the choice to see it or not and you decided to see the movie. It's exacly the same with these childs.
Joesf 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 Rise Of The Triad. Level 4 RSAC Rating. Violence - Wanton & gratuitous violence. (Same level as they classify games with rape and torture) Hinanin and I got this at 13. No questions asked. (Probably the most fun FPS I've ever played multiplayer) Ratings don't mean anything because they don't bar people from buying them like tobacco or cigerettes. Hell, I think we even bought a Leisure Suit Larry <15yo. And even more so, you cannot technically rate a game off what people might possibly say through its median of communication. Shoop 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 You can be proud of anything. You can form a Nazi guild if you want. You can form a Libertarian Party guild if you want. You can form a Pro-Choice guild if you want. Chances are, they will all be shut down the same as this one was. Blizzard does not want political attention; they don't want a boycott of their product by certain groups. Ironically, as soon as this guild was formed, there was no way to avoid attention. They expect guilds to be formed on some basis that is not politically charged. In a perfect world maybe this wouldn't be necessary, but Blizzard's PR department made a desicion, and they'll have to see how it pans out. Frost 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 There's still one thing I cant fucking understand : What they did wrong? I mean.. They pay their monthly fees for WoW, they have a social life, they are gay (they have the right to), and they play WoW.. So why wouldn't they could make a guild? Okay guys tomorrow Im making a new guild.. Quebec-only players... all others are forbid of entering. -- Will there be people complaining about this? No! And it's the same fucking thing! This is fucking low.. seriously, I think thats a stupid sitation. I wouldnt say this for a nazi group... nope forget what I jsut said. I wouldnt even mind. As long as they doesnt start blasting other players because they are nazis and stuff. Cause I dont think gay players plays with gay attitudes... I have a friend who is gay, and seriously it took me at least 2 years to discover.. He plays MMOs, and when I told him about this he was astonished. Sileed 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2006 This is not the same thing. Quebec is not a politically charged issue. In the US maybe .... But yeah it's not the same thing. blizzard has position (probably for other things) but this happens to fall under it. They are sticking to their guns and they should. The harrassment etc that this guild would unfortunately suffer from the player base would probably cause Blizzard a pile of headaches much less the pain/agony the actual victimized player(s) would encounter as well. It's all for the best in the end. Move Along, nothing to see here....

Aelora 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2006 By "they" you mean blizzard, or the general public? I have seen a quebec guild recruiting french only members. Now mind you, thats a language thing far more then it is a region thing. Regarless the next half hour the general chat was berrating each other wether or not its acceptable to recruit in this manner. A relatively uncontroversial screening process. Now imagine it regarding backgrounds or lifestyles that are by choice? Who are we aiding by creating these guild standards? Thats basically like saying "Hey, you're gay, and in order to enjoy this gaming experience, you should come to our guild so you can be with your kind." or the dreaded next step "yeah, you have all your gear, but is your girlfriends name Marcus?" Blizzard is making a fair attempt to nip it in the butt. They will fail, but I'm not going to fault them for making the effort. In fact considering the liberal base of their customers, I think it's kind of cool of them to stand up for protecting their customers, even if it means making the unpopular choice. Marvilly 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 By they I was talking bout Blizzard. Just a guess on my part. But dont forget, this wasnt a gay ONLY guild. Everyone was allowed in that wanted in. It was a gay friendly guild where gay people dont have to be afarid to say that they are gay. I mean lets face it, that could be a hard thing to admit especially in todays society where there is so much debate on what is acceptable. I think they were trying to make gay ppl feel comfortable and able to talk about it openly to other people who might have had the same difficulites htey are having. btw sorry bout the typos, im tired
Kopi 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2006 I think it would be interesting to let it pan out. Consider they had two options: 1. the potential problems that might arise from gay bashing 2. the certain problems that would arise from them nipping this in the bud While if #1 came true it'd be a bigger liability than #2, the 2nd is certain while the 1st is not. But hey, I'm a mathematician, I treat people as spheres.
