Problem:

25 second cool down melee range fire based attack that attempts to knock multiple in-range targets back.

Agro doesn't exactly reset, but the MT's threat is definitely reduced.

Solution:

Every 23 seconds all melee players get out of melee range except for the MT. CT_RaidAssist monitors this.

Give the MT a few seconds of building threat before re attacking.

Sometimes the MT is knocked back. This is discussed below in The Plan.

Wrath of Ragnaros extends just slightly past melee range. When your melee players are backing out, they need to get as far away as possible. In the west and north sides of Rag, you have to back out to the lava. The east side has more room to get out of melee range.

Well we didn't know about this minor detail. =P Oops!

Heh, rag's going DOWN next time for sure now! Great job guys, Ael kept me posted on what happened after I had to leave for work. Wish I could have been there for the last few attempts, but you guys did great that whole run. Even (especially - if you happened to be watching her from the dirtnap) a certain unnamed elven priest that did some MAD rezzing and then healing durring the Domo fight - no, not the one where she backed into Domo's agro range while we were meding up. wink.gif

Seriously though, you all did a very good job, this place is a cakewalk up to rag with all of you now - and he/she/it doesn't have long left. smile.gif

You didn't read my comments in /raid did you? tongue.gif

We did get him down lower each time, soon we'll be at the 50% mark and kicking arse!

They made that look so easy. Although, I couldn't help drooling over the pally in Full Lawbringer the entire fight. I wanna be that pally, completely geared out, healing our MT as we shove Rag's head back down that lava-filled toilet. Better yet, let me Dredge rag of all his lava-y goodness and see how tough he is then! What's that Rag? You dont like having your lava dredged? Too damn bad!

I like that this fight requires a lot of powerful DPS, w00t for going all out!

But really, on top of Fire resist gear, we need to get you all +crit stuff so we can get him below 40% before the spawns come. Ima start pumping out some mongoose pots on my alt for some of you. Gogo crits!

Does anyone know who can make them Elemental Sharpening stones?

3 Requests...

1) can everyone make sure they have ct-raid assist.

http://www.ctmod.net/downloads.ct

all you need to download is the ct-raid assist. this will help in calling out the stages for different bosses so we don't have to call them out on vent and add to the confusion.

2) bring some potions. i know that they tend to be expensive, but we need everyone to be able to support themselves so that one major healing per boss attempt or one major mana can turn the tide. if you want, buy the mats and have the potions made, we have many people that can do that.

3) this is going to be tedious, long, aggravating (i know i get frusterated), but please allow enough time to make a few attempts at Rag. Last time our down time was killer. So if you can't devote 4 hours or so to bashing our heads against a wall, think about stepping to overflow. If it does turn out that you have to leave in between attempts, please let a raid leader know ahead of time so we can try to find a replacement and don't just leave, it is rude and dis-respectful to the rest of the raid.

Good post Felz.

Point #3 is especially important to me as the raid leader. My goal is to get us as much practice as possible right now. In order to do that, we're gonna need as many people dedicated to the encounter as possible. Since we need to kill Domo before Rag every day we try , please plan on playing approximately 4 - 5 hours per Rag raid.

We're taking Rag in baby steps right now and I want the goal for Weds to be getting him below 50% before he spawns his sons. If we do that, we're in great shape.

Keep studying up, and I'll see you all in the Core on Weds.

He despawns after 2 hours...even if you're in combat.

No, not if you are in actual combat with him. . . Or at least everyone we have talked to said he will stay for the fight he is currently in.

He despawned in front of us though, after 2 hours. It was ok though, we were going to leave anyway! =P Gave us time to practice jumping in the lava.

Whoever will be tanking Rags might want to take an extra weapon jsut in case...

Every time a melee player hits Ragnaros, their weapon is damaged.

Perhaps something not too fast as that will wear out the weapon faster. Not sure how bad it hurts per hit, but this would be a stupid reason to lose smile.gif

Also it would help to stop by Blasted Lands and do at least one of the repeatable +50 stat drink quests. The quest givers are right near the graveyard to the north.

It didn't do TOO much damage to me last time. It helped that Beorn and I switched off though. Now that he and I are the Dark Iron Knights we might not need to switch off to often.

Found this. Copy\paste from Rags abilities section.

Ragnaros abilities:

1. Fireball (BY FIRE BE PURGED): targetted AoE (knockback + damage) - this is what he uses to attack your ranged attackers.

This hits for about 1000 damage, not a big deal. This ability causes more damage when you are knocked into the lava.

Counter: Make sure you set up everyone's positions first. You want everyone as spread out as possible. If you can't seem to get everyone far enough apart, try doubling up players on positions. This way, 2 people will get hit but if you space out everyone properly, you can rely on only those 2 going flying.

There are also a few \"backboards\" around Ragnaros. These are nice places to have your healers positioned.

High fire resistance can cause you to resist any knockback in this encounter.

2. Lava Surge (damage) - During the encounter, lava will surge up out of the center swirl, causing ~1000 Fire damage per surge to anyone within its large area (~25y). How often this surges is random enough that at least once, I have been hit with this three times in a row at the same location within 3 seconds. On average, I expect to get hit by this 4 times over 3 minutes. You will often only take ~500 or ~750 with decent FR gear.

Counter: We do not attempt to avoid this. It is not a lot of damage, and we have dedicated shaman taking care of heals for the rogues. Hunters and Druids generally do not need to be within range of this attack to perform their functions.

3. [NEW v2.0] Lava Pulse (damage) - Ragnaros has a new 10y damage AE spell, it looks like a white blast wave.

It appears as if it was designed to discourage defeating Ragnaros in a way some guilds have taken him down that was not intended by the developers: by having an extrordinarily large number of melee DPS classes on him. Without consequences for overloading him with melee, it was possible to defeat Rag within three minutes, before he spawned his Sons of Flame, which I believe is a part of the encounter that Blizzard wants every raid to experience and master.

Counter: Our dedicated Shaman heal our Rogues. We do not attempt to avoid this attack.

4. [NEW v2.0] Wrath (Melee Knockback) (TASTE THE FLAMES OF SULFURON) - This new melee knockback deals large damage as well as a new, very high knockback. This ability is on a 25 second cooldown.

Like any mob with an auto-use ability turned on, he uses it anywhere between 25-30 seconds. Basically, if he is in the middle of another attack, he will have to finish that attack before he can activate Wrath. He does seem use use Wrath as fast as he can, so you expect it around 25-28 seconds reliably.

You will notice your melee classes getting hit with Wrath getting thrown very high in the air, at a much steeper angle upwards than the ranged fireball knockback. This knockback is also resistable, and some believe Fire Resists and/or Defense may play a part. An additional factor to consider regarding this ability is it can strike multiple targets. There is speculation as to how this ability works. Theories include:

A) is a targetted Point-Blank AoE knockback, generating an arcane explosion-type knockback affecting everyone in range (with no graphical explosion).

cool.gif will hit multiple targets near him no matter what direction he is facing that has a chance to knockback all within its range.

C) is a targetted knockback similar to cleave, that will hit up to three targets in a 180 degree radius in front of him.

It has been observed that this attack seems to hit the highest threat first, and if knocked back, the next highest char on the aggro list will become targetted for his general melee.

As of this writing, Nightmares Asylum has beaten Ragnaros three times post-patch, using a strategy designed to avoid his melee knockback ability as if it were type A.

Counter: We have two MT's on either side of Ragnaros. We have our MT @ 5 o'clock and our backup tank @ 9 o'clock, at max melee range. Each tank has 3 priests assigned to healing them.

His ability might not actually function as type A, but our strategy for managing it as type A works just fine. Our most recent Rag victory was Tuesday 6/28, and although I wasn't there I heard we only lost 3 people to minor mistakes. As in all things, practice makes perfect.
