Computer performance.

So I have this great computer quad core, 4g ram, good video card and I find it doesn't run as fast as it used to. So I go to the local PC shop where I originally purchased the computer and discuss with the technician. He tells me it is normal that after installing stuff you lose performance. He suggests that I download a registry cleaner such as Ccleaner. Also he suggests that I upgrade to Windows 7 for added performance. What do you guys think of that?

CC Cleaner is good, I would also Defrag your computer. Go through Add/Remove programs and remove anything you don't need.

 

Windows 7 from Vista will be a performance upgrade, but I would NOT do an inplace upgrade. Backup your data and do a clean install of Windows 7 if that is what you want to use. Otherwise stick with Vista and go over what I said in the first line.

I was experiencing similar issues, but I opted to bite the bullet and do the Windows 7 upgrade.

I backed-up all the stuff I needed (documents, some save files, downloads, etc) and installed from scratch for the 64-bit version. (I bought the OEM Windows 7 which doesn't require a previous version and can be either installed from scratch or on-top of an existing install, and is both 32-bit and 64-bit capable for only $95)

And it definitely is a big improvement.

I have some friends that do a basic install with operating system and utilities such as virus protection/firewall/etc and then do an image back-up and will re-install that image on a re-formatted drive every 6months to a year to maintain performance.

Yes, the upgrade version is just that, an upgrade. It'll use the kernel of your host OS to build the modules for 7. This is a messy process and I can guarantee will lead to problems. Buy the full version (Or run the Beta which is still available for testing from torrent sites) to see if you want to make the switch. I was using Vista before I made the switch and I can honestly say, while I never had any performance degradation with Vista, 7 is considerably snappier feeling.

If you're actually going the whole "Buy Windows 7" route (....wait... People pay for software...?) You might check out your local Best Buy... They're running a deal that technically says if you bought a PC after june 26th, you can get the software and have them install it for a total of $40.... But it your store there is anything like mine.... They're offering that to anyone and everyone...

It's safe to buy the Full Install of Windows 7, don't pirate it.

I will definitely pay. It goes against my values to pirate it and I can afford to buy it so no big deal. Thank you for your answers.

 

In the meantime I have cleaned my computer using Mcaffee quickclean tool and I have defragmented my discs with noticeable results on performance.
