Athalon X2 dual core 5400+ (2.8 ghz OC'd to 3.1)

XFX 9800 gtx 512 mb.

maxxed out (4gb in an XP box) on 1066 mhz DDr2.

Whats the more effective upgrade for WoW frame rates.

Your X2 is pretty decent, I'd be more interested in seeing what kind of framerates you're seeing now with that setup. For me the 9800 was the bottleneck, but I'm running a 64big OS and a Q6600 OC'd to 3.18 (it's on air give me a break). After some testing w/ a GTX260 I went from 9k to 11k in 3dmark vantage. I'm going to be grabbing another one to run them in SLI. If your board can support it I'd recommend going that route.

Sadly WoW doesn't boast an advance enough graphics engine to really take advantage of the cards performance (like physx). In the upgrading from the older card to the new I really haven't seen much of an increase in FPS. I have noticed the difference in L4D and TF2 however. I DO expect a decent jump in FPS when I go SLI, and the later water cooling that's coming to push the quad core until it burns up.

Short answer - GPU, but marginally.
