I've actually played with windows 7 quite a bit already and I must say that I'm impressed.. Microsoft did it right this time and can honestly say that I might actually give up my xp for this... (On the 6 computers I own, all but 1 still runs xp pro...)

I've heard some bad things about downloading 7 from torrent sites, however this link: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/01/10/w...download-links/ has the official download on another server. All you need to do is get the serial from Microsoft and away you go.

I have it currently installed (had Vista before, and XP on another drive) and in Dalaran, my framerate is currently steady at 30 as opposed to 15-25 on XP and 10-15 on Vista, so needless to say, I honestly find this beta more stable than Vista with its latest Service Packs.

I'm a big advocate of vista in particular vista 64bit but since windows 7 is gonna offer DX10 and less ram usage I might switch my Laptop from vista.

I got my copy off of Newsgroups and a key off of a forum comment on Lifehacker. The MS site is having too much trouble keeping up with demand. If you choose to D/L from a torrent or newsgroup just make sure it's an ISO for US EN version 7000.0.081212-1400

Also, they reached their 2.5 million cap but extended downloads until 1/24.

Took me a while to find a network driver that worked, but other than that I haven't had any problems. I really like the new taskbar and the "Peek" feaure. Startup times seem a little faster than Vista, and browsing through folders and files seems much faster than on the copy of Vista on the same computer.

For some additional info on where to get download links, beta keys, dual booting, etc.: http://lifehacker.com/tag/windows-7/

Are people happy with Vista? I guess not if they already offer a new OS...

Actually yes. Most Vista users are very happy with it. Most people who say they aren't or think MS failed with Vista have actually never even used it. I hate having to go back to XP at work now >.

And the reason they're offering a new OS is because their plan is to not wait 5 years between OS's like they did with XP. It hurt them when they released Vista because customers were too comfortable with XP and the price for a new OS after 5 years of development was too high. It also makes it more difficult to keep up with Apple who releases a new OS like every freagn year.

I've had a little time to play with it today, it's pretty slick so far the new task bar is pretty amazing. It doesn't seem as initially invasive as vista was which I think home end users will appreciate. I really like Vista and I think this is another step in the right direction.

The changes will not be as abundant as with XP to Vista. The improvements to performance will probably be worth it though. Don't expect to see it released until the end of the year though. Beta doesn't end until August and I think Ballmer said it would be around December when it goes on sale.

Anyone using the IE 8 beta? I noticed it came with Win7. I still hate IE, but maybe they'll get it right with IE8. But probably not.

My only experience with IE8 so far has been a customer downloading it and it breaking his ability to browse the web. Ended up having to remove it and downgrade back to 7.
