Athene probably did exploit... they checked with Blizzard about mob tagging and then letting a seperate group kill off those mobs... i.e. what the world-first 70 mage did, but they failed to clarify that in BC, they did it in the open world whereas for WOTLK, they joined an instance... the ret pally left the group.. tagged mobs and the other 4 killed off mobs resulting in much higher xp per mob kill.

 

They're full of crap... the fact that he got reset back to 70... without even being suspended and investigated proves that its an exploit of group mechanics within an instance. I bet they even knew this, but were hoping that nothing would happen.

 

The GM even said that using the 'whole' guild to kill off tagged mobs was a clever use of mechanics... hinting to open-world tagging and not instances. If the way Athene levelled to 80 was legitimate... everyone would do it and effectively ruin WOTLK. Getting a whole guild to help you level to 80 is a different matter though... way more effort involved and unlikely that everyone will try to do it.
