Shadrende 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 Ok so it has come time to find a new manufacturer for servers at the school, and we are looking at Dell and HP. HP: In contacting HP we gave them the pricing we wanted. HP said ok but you have to be part of this buying group. We said ok, the following day: HP says ok now you have to fill out this form. We look at the form, it is a form that qualifies you as a minority or female owner of a company. We say to HP, we are not either of these. The following day: HP says well that's a shame you have to pay $1200 more per server. Let me get this straight, because the owner of the company or myself are not a minority or a woman, we have to pay $1200 more per server. Do you have any idea how fast HP would be out of business if they only gave the discount to white people? This pisses me off. Dell: What do we need to do for you to get your business. 30 mins later: that pricing looks fair let's make a quote. 15 mins later: quote in hand. /middle finger to HP. -_-
Hykos 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 so wait, you'd have to pay more for something because you're a white male? wow, Obama really did bring change.
Joesf 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 Dell rocks. If you spend a million dollars on servers they'll give you free shwag like its going out of style. I don't think we;ve had any major problems with the servers either, exception being HDDs.

Ecthelion 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 That's got more to do with their pricing then it does with anything else. You can get tax breaks to encourage woman and minorities to own business (Co-owner of Dads business =P we've been through this a little). It's either the agent from HP sucking a lot. Or HPs pricing indexes being terrible. And Yeah, Dell is all about making you feel loved at every step of the way. Schwag will rain down on you like you're Noah. It's a little nuts. Gryph 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 I used to hate Dell servers but now they rock. Plus, like Joe said... they give you free shit! They just gave us a free m1000e blade chassis with 4 m600 blades... just to "play with". That's a $36,000 toy at work

Joesf 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2008 gwinnett county uses IBM blade servers. and alcatel switches I'm partial to the IBM XSeries. I got to work with them A LOT a few years back during a Data Center expansion. They are some seriously beefy machines and are pretty damn easy to work with inside and outside. But don't expect anything more than whats on the invoice. We dropped over $100k on TWO machines and didn't even get a toy hammer to beat em with. Cisco, F5, IBM, and Checkpoint all you need to run a bitchin data center.
