Not really vista lite, its the same kernel same core components only they removed the crap that bothered people about vista (which is pretty easy to do yourself) and then added better functionality for media, the start menu, and the task bar. That and I believe it is going to support multi touch monitors.

the multi-touch display feature is sick. there is a video on neowin.net of them playing "air hockey" with it. =)

the task bar quick lists/jump menu feature is ftmfw imo

Hence the kind, jackass!

And yeah that support for multi-touch monitors is going to be a standard feature on a great deal of our laptops coming down the pipe. All in prep for this OS.

The reason I said that it's Vista light, is that MS is reusing a LARGE portion of the advancements made by Vista's creation. It's not a clean sheet design. There's a lot of hardware that has been / is being developed for Vista features that they can't come up with something totally different w/o screwing over the RD departments of the major hardware manufactures. Esp after the tooling of factories to produce the hardware that makes vista shine. Like Dell has some hybridized hard drives we developed in partnership with Seagate to take advantage of the ready boost features in vista.

When I'm bored at work I read our tech pages and take certification exams ...

/shrug, what are you going to do in a building full of nerds?

I think the improved memory management will be the best thing about it. Needing 2+ GB's of ram for an OS is crazy. Having 4 and it still using all of it is ridiculous. The new hardware driver update utility, also a plus. Fast boot times, oh how I've missed the.

It would also be great if they include the instant on OS they've hinted at.

More info on the features of Windows 7

I like the error reporting and crashing resiliency.

"The Problem Steps Recorder watches what you do to trip an error—if you can repeat it after turning on the recorder, that is—and it generates a useful, detailed error report in a language that actually resembles English!"

When does this come out?

Mid to late '09 I think, if it doesnt get pushed back. It just went in or is going into a pre-beta/closed beta testing soon. Some peeps that attended a conference got free keys, like those twerps that go to Blizzcon and get beta keys. Hopefully a cracked version of the beta comes out this year. I'd like to play with it.
