Well...yea that is what would happen. I would honestly prefer it, so the realms would only go down on scheduled maintenance. I would go out of town or something that week.....

If they were to actually invest in new hardware and upgrade SC, the realm could be offline for as long as an entire week - as opposed to the odd few hours now and then?

It shouldn't need to be offline longer than a normal maintenance window. They should be able to set the new hardware up with no users on it, run around a bit with some GMs to make sure it's working (or even use it as one of the test realms!), then when it is taken down on tuesday, simply copy all the data files over and point the login server to the new IP address.

*shrug*

Well I understand what you say but it is a pity. One for the individuals and secondly for hardcore guilds like Immortality and many others who have helped develop the game.

I think we're all speculating quite a bit as to what is going on. I agree that we have the "oldest" server but does anyone know for a fact that it is still running on the same hardware? And I agree with Pete, there is no way it would be down for more than a day. They would get everything but the character database up and running then copy it over on the normal maintenance window.

It isn't. They updated the hardware on skullcrusher and quite a few other realms a while back. Granted, it's probably due again, but this is certainly not a 4 year old machine straight out of the package.

There's no way that they're still running the same hardware that they were 4 years ago. So Mike is correct. If the guys in there server rooms are worth a damn (and I HIGHLY suspect that they're awesome) then this server has seen regular upgrads of hardware and software since it was put into service. The larger problem that we're having is our population - because of our age we've got some name recognition and/or people creating on this server to be with friends. It's a pop inbalance that I belive is causing the problem. With the server basically running at full boar constatnly and with having to move information from it to it's instance servers. Anything minor hiccup is going to cause ripples on the larger system.

I hate to use the stone on a pond metaphore but it's fairly accurate.

That or I'm wrong and they're still using IBM 100 serries with the magnetic tape drives and 500kb hard drives, with ours being tucked away in it's own sweltering and humid server hell. And the IT pro is a lepper gnome that's drunk and taking a wiz on rack.

Who konws.

What ecth said, Plus, im sure (and I am NO where near a programmer) that there are unforseen bugs you get when you add the patch to 10 million people rather than just the PTR's.

Like, if say Moonfire was causing extra memory while processing cause of some bad line of code, all the druid using it cause the server extra stress or w/e. /Shrug!

7PM invites 8:30 pulls ><

That wouldn't happen if people showed up on time, and well, then there is the fact that group composition matters still.
