Ajaxthegreat 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 (edited) Good idea, lets risk a nuclear war over Ukraine and Georgia. Let Russia have them. I don't know if its more infuriating or terrifying. Ajaxthegreat 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 Good point. I just get a little nervous when I hear someone who wants to be VP of the US considering a nuclear apocalypse over a couple of poor ex-soviet countries.

Ecthelion 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 Just want to throw this out there but should Georgia join NATO then we're bound by the NATO charter to come to their deffence. I'm not saying fire up the nukes now, or that even it's even a good idea, but the whole founding idea was an attack on one member is an attack on all of them. We've got much more effective tools to deal with Russia then force though, so it's more rhetoric then anything.
Hykos 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 (edited) I don't see how this is a reflection on Palin. Georgia and Ukraine have been attempting to join NATO for years now, and the official stance of both the US and EU for the past few years is that they should be allowed to join, and as of April '08 NATO has informed them both that they will be allowed to join. You can't expect the US or EU to change their mind just because Russia invades Georgia. After all, that is the primary reason why they wish to join NATO in the first place. They were expected to join in the next couple years, and while rushing it now might cause diplomatic issues between Russia and NATO member states, it's probably in the best interest of both nations and the other former soviet block countries that are also worried about increased Russian aggression towards them. Expediting Georgia and Ukraine's membership is like drawing a diplomatic line in the sand with Russia without the use of military force. Once members, Russia will probably retreat entirely, unless Georgia allows them to take the breakaway regions. No offence, but assuming that it will lead to nuclear war is a pretty far-fetched assertion. She is simply confirming her support of the official US policy on the matter. If I'm not mistaken, Obama has done the same, although less emphatically. edit: LINK1 LINK2 LINK3 Obama also supports Georgia NATO membership Edited September 16, 2008 by Hykos
Ryee 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 (edited) Good idea, lets risk a nuclear war over Ukraine and Georgia. Let Russia have them. I don't know if its more infuriating or terrifying. The US has way too much history with both Ukraine and Georgia to just "let Russia have them." Mikheil Saakashvili (whose name looks infinitely cooler in Georgian) has a long, good standing relationship with the US. He attended Columbia University, worked as an intern here in the States, etc. etc. Oh AND he almost got blown up once with GW Bush by a grenade! (didn't detonate though). And who could forget about Princess Leia! http://www.ukraine-observer.com/image_add/Image/tymoshenko-2.jpg I mean Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine's first and only female Prime Minister. She is pretty much the anti-Putin voice for the European former Soviet nations, and also has a long history (personal and professional) with the US. While I don't think the US would actually go into a nuclear war (hastily anyways) with Russia over former Soviet countries, getting them into NATO, as Hykos said, is a really strong diplomatic message that...we ain't playin yo! But I doubt we'd just let Medvedev and Putin "have them back". As crazy as I am about Prime Ministers with KGB ties running large amounts of natural resource rich land... Ajaxthegreat 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 I think Putin is more interested in using oil and gas as a strategic weapon. I recently saw a really really good "biography" of Putin on the Biography Channel. It follows him from KGB to the Kremlin. It also shows how he has really brought the KGB ideal of control with him. He is an imperialist and believes that the breakup of the Soviet Union was a tragedy, should never have happened and those responsible for it are traitors. It gave me a lot of respect for him and also made me fear him a bit. It was really amazing to see the role this guy has played and the way he is setting up Gazprom(sp?) to be the future weapon of Russia. The biography was excellent and you should all check it out. Also, probably a bad idea to bring politics into it when I'm still trying to get into the guild
