i'd assume that it was the parents that were complaining, not the child.

And why they happen to be complaining is my point. Its not as though the game is telling him he is the obese one. The article did not only speak of the father's reaction to the title given to his daughter by the game, but the fact that both parents had a trying time convincing her that she was not fat.

 

I agree with you in the sense that such scenarios ("Lawl you're fat!") can occur often in any life. But what would the father's lack of protest do?

 

"Don't freak, insertdaughternamehere. It happens, that's life." Sounds like a much harsher response than complaining about something that may have mentally scarred his own child.

Is it not the function of the game to determine a person's fitness level? Really, what was the expected outcome of playing?

I was just being honest. I thought it was funny. Would I point and laugh at a little girl that think she's fat? No, but I still think the scenario is funny.

The article (once I read it) did make a good point that if the game uses BMI to judge "fattness", that's very flawed.

 

With a little creative programming the Wii system should be able to make really meaningful measurements of fitness level (endurance, flexibility, etc) and provide feedback that would be useful.

 

And of course, tact is always a plus.

 

As an ex-teacher in the public system, I'm probably a little hypersensitive about the trend to ignore / sugarcoat kids' flaws for fear of hurting their feelings. IMO raising kids who think it's cool to be unhealthy doesn't do them any favours!

The girl is healthy though.

if wii fit works solely on BMI to categorize people, i'll be stuck in "underweight" forever, even though one look at me clearly says i'm not. no machine/system/game is going to be able to make an accurate view of a live person's health, that's what doctors are for.

 

as far as the qq'ing from the parents in the article, i have no sympathy. i won't go into it very far, they just need to embrace the first part of my post and move on.

Obviously the parents are to blame IMO. Like seriously, how much stuff on video games has been on the news requesting parents look into the games they are buying for their kids before they purchase them.

 

The video for the game on it's official site clearly shows the 4 categories "Underweight" "Normal" "Overweight" and "Obese".

 

If they didn't want to scar the child by getting one of the latter, to be honest don't buy the game.

 

 

BMI measurements for people who are very active [read: have a significant amount of muscle mass] are going to be typically inaccurate, because it weighs that extra weight from muscle as fat. anyone who is beginning a workout regime should know that.

This was a little kid though. Regardless, the parents should read up on stuff beforehand.

maybe the wii wouldn't tease her so much if she wasn't so fat...
