Cottoneyejoe 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Overrated games with no story line are overrated. Garbage Sauceboss is garbage. But the storyline for smash is... I don't know actually, I haven't played it. I got to the door in Pit's area and after 20 seconds of not knowing how to open it, I turned it off. I'm not playing story mode. Only multiplayer. I can't say much about the storyline, but the multiplayer experience is a lot better than I thought it would be.

Sauceboss 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Fighting game or not they can atleast make the one player of a game somewhat intresting. I realize it's a fighting game, and it's got a bunch of nintenduz people that are OMGAWDS FIGHTING EACH OTHER, but really aside from the comedy (which is there I see it I mean owning your friends with olimar and the pikminz crew? Sign me up) I personally think it's just a subpar fighter. If I wanna play a fighter I'm gonna play Virtual Fighter or Tekken (both which storylines lack I realize that, this is another reason I don't like fighters I like playing games that provide a story to entertain me admist the mindless violence. I'm not saying I'd never play brawl, and I'm not saying I wouldn't have a blast raping my friends at brawl/getting raped, I'm just saying it's really just an overrated game because of the choices of people in said game, and the comedy factor. People saying it's the "BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER" are not people who know anything about fighting games sry2sy, but that's my opinon. Sauceboss 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 ^ I agree it's a fun game to relax with your friends and make fun of them as you smash them in the face with cool nintendo peoplez. But I don't think it's as good as people make it out to be. People are treating it like the most epic game to be released this year and frankly I just don't agree with that. XD Like I said, I'm gonna play it, I'm sure I'll have fun, but at the end of the day I still say it's a little bit overrated.

I haven't followed the hype of the game since I don't have a Wii, so I'm not sure exactly how people are raving...but Super Smash Bros. Melee was my vote for greatest fighter ever. Why? It was simplistic and a blast to play with friends. What would make something better? I am tired of the tekken/soul calibur/mortal combat methodolgy of fighting games where you have to memorize 30 button combos to the point where it becomes mindless mashing. I digress. I was honestly considering getting a Wii just for this game, but I'm not sure it's worth it. Coming from a Game Cube for Melee, are the controls weird? I know the Wii has some weird controller. Is the game good enough to merit a Wii? Edited March 11, 2008 by Coeus

Vanin 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 (edited) a story? really? I mean...you will ONLY buy a fighting game with a story? Let's see...there is always one guy who wants to be the strongest and obviously with a secret that can only be discovered by getting to the last boss. (at which time you discover that the REAL secret will be given out in the sequel) We have to have the pro-wrestler type guy...why is he there? we need a big dude and uhh...he...likes to...body slam people. Alright...let's thrown in a few female fighters that no one will play but every anime (emo) kid will swear by...this includes the male character who we find out are actually female....when? you guessed it at the final boss now...we will for some strange reason have this super tournament...that...will...uuhh...feature some supernatural (who will be related to atleast one person in the roster and will definitely have HORNS! because he is evil)...boss...who...will destory the planet unless some freaks decide to fight. Ok, I hope you will now enjoy every fighting game you play. Edited March 11, 2008 by Vanin

Sooooo basically what your saying is super smash brothers melee was the best fighter ever because it was a mindless mash at it's release while with tekken you had to LEARN how to play and memorize button patterns to become sucessful and turn it into a button mash, but it's still a less mindless button mash as you have combos to remember. Melee started out as a mindless mash, and ended still being a mindless mash, because it's a simplistic game. Sorry to say but simplistic doesn't make a fighter good :33. Trigori 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 If you buy fighting games for their story line, I am /ashamed of you. Fighting games are built on game mechanics and replayability, not whether or not I like the character and his/her's motives. That having been said, some of the best fighting games I have ever played and will always hold a place in history, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat II (nothing like a literal bicycle kick followed up with a Flying Dragon), Soul Edge (PS1) and Soul Caliber (DC). I love all the Smash Brother's games but I almost wouldn't put them in the fighting category. They are almost like party games, best enjoyed when you have a bunch of your friends around for a night of absolute insanity. That having been said, I picked up Brawl on Sunday, and it is a friggin' blast.

I don't think anyone buys fighting games for their story, also what igor posted is really more of a plot line (which really isnt quite the same thing). I've had guilty gear x2 for about.. 4 or 5 years I think? Still love it to death (though it makes my thumbs hurt). Still trying to beat I-No on manic mode.. sigh, if only my old ps2 card hadn't fried i'd still have my old data.
Esteban 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 (edited) Um.... I am not sure if I should step in... I will. Why I like SSBB so much as opposed to Tekken (which is fun from time to time) is because the game has the potential to become extremely complex. This is so because of how simple the controls are. I am not sure if anyone here has played with skilled SSB players but when you play for a while the game becomes less of a button smashing in sequences and more of a elaborate dance between the players on the screen. Rather than having you memorize 30-300 button combinations (1000 if you have ever played the mimicking characters in Tekken), you have to pay attention to what is going on on the field and react to it or get flung across the map to your ultimate doom. The controls allow you to attempt a million things in a million different way. Just the other day (after playing it for a good 11 hours with my friends) we were still being amused by the interesting combos that we could come up with just to get our hands on that smash power up. And I will not even get started on the amount of fun things you can try with all the items. The game feels random at times. This is specially so if you are playing it for the first time. Or the first few days... After a while the gameplay becomes far more technical, unpredictable and fun than Tekken can ever be. As for story: Let me say that Tekken (I am only comparing SSB to Tekken atm because I am not as experienced with other fighter games like Soul Calibur, even though I do think they are tons of fun) featured one of the most cheesy stories ever. SSBB on the other hand had a most creative way to deal with an adventure mode. The most creative way that I have seen in ages. And by creative I actually mean it freaking mixed fighter game with a classic nintendo game. Wtf? why would nintendo do this? Because it is a fun style of game. It is why Sonic, Mario, Metroid, Duke Nukem (DN 2), and countless other famous video games were, and still are, so fun to play. Aside from the Gameplay aspect of the story mode in SSBB, the actual story is pretty fun and not very stretched (once you neglect to pick on the fact that Snake is strolling around a fantasy nintendo world). I mean, it reminds me of the times when I would sit down with my action figures/legos and have my friends and I set up on epic adventures with them. SSBB pretty much Stumps any fighter game I've seen storywise. Yup... wall of text alright. Edited March 12, 2008 by Esteban
Sauceboss 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 ^ I agree that SSBB is bound to be fun, and after mauling my face off with a gamecube controller to SSBM I know how fun the game could be but more complex then a fighter like tekken or god forbid virtual fighter? I can't agree with that one. The fact that every block in tekken can be turned into a counter and a combo at some point makes the game alot more then a button mash to me, and makes it complex in it's own right as you have to know when to react, sure there's not weird comedic explosions and stuff going on, but imo that's what turns me off about SSMBs it's all about spamming one button in certain places I agree you can do some sweet combos involing the environment, and that's wicked cool, and you can take the came to a lot higher of a level then a normal button mashing game, but I still think it's a pretty novice fighter. The fact that the terrian plays such a BIG importance makes it less of a fighter for me. Because if you're just good at using random weapons you can rape all kinds of face and random environment, but that doesn't really seem like the fighter to me. Plus a 4 player fighter just irks me. I'm traditional in the sense that to me a fighter should stay 1v1 or some sort of tagging system but one person out at a time. More then this seems like overkill and they always add things to make the game work, things that aren't needed. Anyways novice fighter but a good party game I COMPLETELY agree. It's fun with alot of people, but other then that I think it's minorly overrated, and the best fighter ever? No way. Best party game ever? Yes way. Also unless they flashed up the single player mode, it's still gonna be subpar. It's cool that they mixed a fighter and a platformish type thing, but the platform thing for me is a bit overrated, and it's not like this mix has never been done before, the funny of it is that you're peoples from other videogames and stuff and I get that, but I guess the humor is just long on me not liking some of the lamer people they put in the game, and the fact that people are stepping all over other fighters with this party game. That's really what it boils down to when you get to the nittygritty.
Noesis 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Dude, sauce, it's ALL about button mashing. that's the only way to play games!
Coeus 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 I don't know about anyone else, but after playing SSBM for years, I can say it's the least button-mashing fighter I've ever played. That's including soul calibur, DOA (all off them), Tekken, etc... Sure if you don't know what you're doing you're gonna mash it, but that's with any game. I don't think we're going to agree here, since there's clearly a divide: you prefer the 1v1, 'oldschool', combo-linking fighters, I and others here prefer 'party game', the simple controls, and ultimately what we see as more complex gameplay (weapons + environments + keeping track of 3 other players = more complex imo), etc... So when this semester is over, I'm probably buying a Wii for Brawl. xD
