Coeus 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2007 Ok, let me re-phrase that then. To be in a successful country star or rapper requires no talent. That isn't to say that I don't wish I could be a country musician. Doing dick on stage for assloads of money is really appealing, don't get me wrong. To say that screaming immediately removes all talent is pretty narrow-minded. Can you do it? Can you do it while playing ripping guitar solos? Didn't think so. Show me ANY country or rap song that requires that amount of skill on ANY instrument to play and you'll have a point. That's just untrue. Your view: you need to be able to play really well to be considered talented in music. My view: you need to actually be able to sing to be considered talented in music. In you music, people don't sing, they scream, so i view that as less talented. In my music, they don't play as hardcore on the instruments, so you view them as less talented. Get off the musical high-horse thinking your music is better simply because they 'always' write their own songs and play an instrument well. Let me put it like you: "Don't get me wrong, I wish I could be a death metal musician. I could learn to play the guitar and scream my lungs out on stage and have people think I'm edgy, cool, and creative for assloads of money". Hvilelos 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) Let me put it like you: "Don't get me wrong, I wish I could be a death metal musician. I could learn to play the guitar and scream my lungs out on stage and have people think I'm edgy, cool, and creative for assloads of money". Haha, except you wouldn't be making assloads of money. And anybody that "screams their lungs out" is only injuring themselves - screaming or growling properly takes a lot of technique and training. Otherwise you get nodes on your vocal chords and have to get surgery. Or have to quit because you run the risk of going mute. Screaming is just like singing. Some even take it to the next level and scream on note. It's hardly different, and shouldn't be considered less talented, just because it's not pleasing to your ears. Sauceboss: It is completely different for pop numbers. I'm not saying learning those dance moves isn't hard. I couldn't do it. But what I could do is go on a stage, sing some lyrics somebody else wrote for me, and not have to worry about actually being good at singing because the effects rack running in real time is correcting every single mistake I make. Or I could just lip sync, because that's pretty prevalent as well. And I fail to see how my statement is untrue. Here's what I do. I learn how to play acoustic guitar and sing acceptably. Record company comes to me and says, hey, you're alright kid, you even have some good ideas. They send me to a big producer and recording studio. Then they tell me everything I made isn't good enough, and hand me a stack of sheet music, containing the songs for "my" album. I fail to see how that requires talent, and yet it is the story of so many popular artists, not singling country out. Sure, you can suck as much as you want and play in any kind of band. But success isn't accessible for sucking in a non-popular genre. Edited November 10, 2007 by Hvilelos

emerald 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2007 By the way. Your argument is so retarded it's not even funny, everything people have posted, is music, performed by very talented people. Don't get me wrong, I HATE rap, and I HATE country, but it's music, of a different taste. Drop the whole argument..

Tutubo1 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 Ok, let me re-phrase that then. Lol, I disagree with you and so you know, that's barely a re-phrase of anything. Can I do it? Never tried. What does that matter what I can do or not? I'll agree that if you want to consider screaming and growling a talent, dude in the song had it. I just don't believe that makes him the most talented musician ever. I also don't believe that being a country star / rapper requires no talent. If it did, there would be more of them. Also, I hate to break it to you.. most rappers write their own material. In fact, writing lyrics is a large part of being a rapper. I'm sure some country stars do as well, but I don't listen to tons of country so who knows. As far as "Show me ANY country or rap song that requires that amount of skill on ANY instrument to play and you'll have a point", last time I checked most country stars play instruments. Do they play music you'd enjoy? No, but they are still singing while playing an instrument. Sadly, rappers use beats made in studios, so I guess that makes them lose all credibility as musicians? >.> Sorry to even make a post and make you type out more crap, but I had to. Saying other musicians have no talent because you don't like / agree with their musical styles IS narrowminded. As an opinion, hey believe in what you want. But trying to make such a huge generalization a factual comment is just retarded. So to close my essay, I'd like to thank you for reading and wasting 2 minutes of your time. I look forward to returning the favor in the coming hours. If youre not HV, then LoL at you. You really didn't have to read this as you knew what it'd say. Way to waste time. Next time you want to waste time, go farm me some Sunfury signets. I need that commie rep on Bramas. Thanks. LINKS!!! Country song I like and agree with.. talent! (got boobs, so nsfw?) Klaudia 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 I'm gonna attempt to jump on this! So let us remember that a good number of metal bands have both a vocalist and a guitarist and its pretty rare to see someone shred and scream at the same time [that is, being the only person in the band doing so]. Whereas country singers are typically either just singers, or singer/guitarist. If we are discussing skill levels here, theres a difference in being able to play the guitar versus being able to sing. It's relative to what a listener looks for in music of course, but theres a certain level of respect necessary for people who are able to play guitar excellently, as well as people who can reach every possible [vocal] note. Also, metal doesn't immediately equal screaming. C'mon FP, I know we've all been playing Guitar Hero lately - you can't tell me Dragonforce isn't some serious OWNAGE, and you can immediately make out their lyrics. [for those who haven't- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3H4liC2sWg] Anyway, music is a wide field of course and there are different approaches to talent in the underground as well as with major record labels - as HV said, the higher you go up the less likely it is your music is "yours" and yours only. And as the majority of people in America like country and rap, its easier to gain popularity. There's always an entire creative team behind any popular artist, who have the job of producing each track and editing it as they see fit. Popular artists often get to work with the best producers who have a shitton of experience so they know exactly what works and what doesn't. Metal bands don't always have that luxury because they aren't anywhere near as popular [whens the last time you saw a metal song hit #1 on the charts?] so often its just the actual band and a few unknown producers working on the album. Hvilelos 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 lol, Rodney Carrington is pretty funny. You didn't have to post a video for me to know that. I'm not calling anybody the most talented musican ever. That would be impossible to determine, there are so many different styles. But would you not agree that somebody that masters the guitar, can play it while singing, and also writes every other instrument in the band is supremely talented? I guess it's hard to tell without musical background, but those guitar riffs, the way they weave in and out of dissonance and harmony, while they are playing two separate things... /unngghnghghgh To me, stuff like that is the pinnacle of writing music, as opposed to strumming some minor chords over a 4/4. I guess I just can't stand too much simplicity. Guys like Mos Def are an exception to the rule, imo. This sort of stuff I can listen to, even if the looping samples get repetitive, unlike the shit that gets spewed out like below (although it makes me laugh): I'm bouncin on my toe watch me supersoak dat hoe I'ma pass it to arab then he gon pass it to the low (low) haterz wanna be me Soulja boy, I'm the man They be lookin at my neck sayin it's the rubberband man (man) watch me do it (watch me do it) dance (dance) Let get to it (let get to it) Nope, you cant do it like me Hoe, so dont do it like me Folk, I see you tryna do it like me Man, that shit was ugly For rap, it really comes down to intelligent lyrics, which appear to be in short supply.
