Been listening to a lot of Decapitated.

I generally listen to death metal, industrial, prog and jazz. And occasionally classical.

And I have a vehement hatred for rap and country. I prefer music that requires talent.

And emo music.

Statements like this only exemplify the ignorance that surrounds the public perception of death metal.

Listen to this and name a single rap or country act with this much talent:

Necrophagist

Country is for people that couldn't scream or sing with a steady tone, so they sing with cracking voices.

Rap is for the same people, but they have to sing really fast because they know they're going to jail soon.

*shrug* The guitar sounds good, but the growled out lyrics are just weird to me. You're comparing apples to orange. Death Metal, I assume, is about the instruments, while country is all about the lyrics. You see your version of talent, I see mine.

Thinking country musicians can't sing or all have shaky voices is an example of the ignorance people have towards country music. Some can't, and they're inevitabley less popular, with a few exceptions (Hank Williams Jr. for an example....not a great singing voice, but has lyrics people like, so he remains popular in spite of the fact. Personally I dislike him).

Others, like Garth Brooks, have some of the largest fan bases of any musician(s) in history, ever. You need talent for that.

I'm not a fan of rap. However, there are some quality rap songs that get less playtime because they don't have the right 'image', so all you hear on the radio are the stereotypical ones.

Agree to disagree.

The problem with your argument is that the majority of major country singers do not write their own songs. They do not write the lyrics. How can lyrics have meaning when somebody else wrote them?

Songs are relational though. The meaning of the song is still there even though someone else is singing the lyrics, and they relate to the individual listening to the lyrics.

An example that comes to my mind is a cover of a song. If you never heard the original and only the cover (of lets say some really amazing lyrical masterpiece) then I would guess, if the cover band is good, the song itself didn't lose meaning.

I think this whole death metal vs. country is slowly falling into taste category though

well personally i like to judge my music by its cover. if the cover has something on it thats gonna kick my ass, then its good. i shall give an example:

garth brooks

http://www.dance-lyrics.com/ama/scarecrow_b00005qb7m.jpg

pensive. solitary. garth brooks has just wrangled some cattle. he removes his gloves which from the looks of it are not blood stained, which means he did not wrangle them by hand. lame.

dimmu borgir

anyway thats just my two cents [which i recently handed over to tom]
