If you are installing windows XP fresh from a CD, I'd check your media to make sure it's ok. If it is ok, it could be bad sectors on your drive, try to boot up into repair mode, get to a command prompt and run the chkdsk /f command. Honestly the install doesn't take long, if it failed to copy files don't try to fix it, start over with a clean install.

This. I used to work at a camera store and this is how we would learn about new cameras and strengths/weaknesses of each model. I'm out of the loop on cameras now, but in general the higher end models like the S700 were good, and the lower priced models were ok. The build quality has ramped up in the last few years with Fuji, but they are pretty reliable. Sony is good too, you just pay a bit more than you would for another model. The only thing I hated about Sony were the warranties. They have to get sent back to Sony most of the time and it takes forever if something goes wrong.

CC Cleaner is good, I would also Defrag your computer. Go through Add/Remove programs and remove anything you don't need. Windows 7 from Vista will be a performance upgrade, but I would NOT do an inplace upgrade. Backup your data and do a clean install of Windows 7 if that is what you want to use. Otherwise stick with Vista and go over what I said in the first line.
