  1. An application written in almsot impeccable English, with full use of punctuation and capitalization?! I like your style sir.

    Now, if you will just go ahead and provide us the necessary photo of yourself we require of all applicants (preferably of face and torso, clothing optional), we can get moving on this...

    Nah just kidding. But omg holy paladins? I thought you were all ret?

  2. S(x*e^4x)

    Let:

    u=x

    du=dx

    dv=e^4x

    v=(1/4)e^4x

    S(x*e^4x) = uv - S(vdu)

    = xe^4x - (1/4)S(e^4x dx)

    = xe^4x - (1/4)[(1/4)e^4x]

    = xe^4x - (1/16)e^4x

    Evaulated from 0 to 1/4:

    =(1/4)e^(4*1/4) - (1/16)e^4(1/4) - [0e^4*0 - (1/16)e^4*0]

    = e/4 - e/16 + 1/16

    = 3e/16 + 1/16

    done :P

  3. New scoring system? :(

    I got a 1350 in 02 when i took mine (800 math, 550 verbal...clearly i picked the right major in college).

    Any of these new scores over 1600 are patently false. I just don't like it. I mean, what if we changed the regular 100 point scale (A through F) and the new max was 254? Chaos would ensue, riots in the street, looting, vandalism...

    This is a sad day for us all.

    Theres an elephant here that needs to be addressed.

  4. Gay Marriage - No - There is an opposite sex for a reason.

    Let the forum riots begin.. hehe

    [removed]

    Explain to me, if you can, what your "reason" is for there being an opposite sex, as it relates to gay marriage.

    Maybe it stems from some misguided religious belief, where you think that, since homosexuality was spoken against in the Bible it must be bad. If you're audacious enough to try and quote the Old Testament Levitic laws to me to make your case, I hope you don't wear shirts made with more than one fiber (including polyester), manage to follow all the dietary laws, are circumcised, uphold Sabbath work codes, et al. If you don't, I'll see you in whatever cozy ring of hell Dante had in mind for us.

    If you want to look at the New Testament, there is only one mention of this by Christ himself, while the other myriad of things he preaches against (murder, persecution, prostitution, affairs, etc) are all perfectly acceptable and do not disqualify you from being married, or dissolve a current marriage if you commit one of these offenses. The two or three other mentions of homosexuality in the New Testament are by Paul, in his writings to the Thessalonians and Corinthians. Paul's a pretty stand up guy, but he's not God.

    Maybe you feel that from some reproductive stand point, homosexuality is against the natural order of things. That a penis and vagina are made to go together, in order to continue a species. Homosexual (in a very literal sense--same sex) interactions are not unique to humans. Black swans, gulls, mallards, penguins, two types of dolphins, bisons, a few species of apes and monkeys, elephants, giraffes, polecats, sheep, hyenas, dragonflies, fruit flies (stop me when you're bored), hell even your own horny dog with no good prospects around, all in some form are known to practice same-sex interaction (be it sex, mating patterns, territorial dominance). So to call it unnatural; that is, not found in nature, is a little odd. But perhaps you feel that as a more sentient species, we should realize that only male and female should participate in sex--that, perhaps, the stupid dragon flies don't realize they can't knock up another guy. So if you want to argue that sex is something used for procreation, you've just started yourself down a slippery slope. Do you always have sex with a woman with the intent of making a baby? If you don't, do you realize you're in violation with a good deal of Catholic and Anglican based religions, which preach against having sex unless it is both unitive and procreative?, effectively prohibiting the use of contraception (birth-control, IUDs, condoms, morning after pills).

    So pick or choose. If you're religious, I hope you're following all the guidelines prescribed by your faith in regards to sex (and perhaps what to have for dinner every night), otherwise leave it alone before I call you a hypocrite. If you are non-religious and have some opposition to it from a natural standpoint, see above.

    Homosexuality isn't something our generation, our country, has dreamed up in the last 100 years. Homosexuality has existed across cultures and continents as far back as antiquity. Age-structured homosexuality was predominant in Ancient Greece (pederasty). Nearly all of East Asia acknowledged Gender-structured homosexuality (one person playing a more feminine, submissive role; see Dream of the Red Chamber), and is still not prohibited legally there today. Other cultures, such as Persia, Turkey, some Arabic nations (Iran - "There are no gay people in Iran") all practice (although not openly for fear of political persecution) age or gender structured homosexuality. More and more Egalitarian relationships are becoming the norm in Western cultures today.

    For you to come onto these forums, KNOWING that there are openly gay people in this guild who will read your comments, is the worst kind of trolling. How dare you tell me that my sexual identity is invalid because "there is an opposite sex for a reason." How dare you presume to know anything about me, to think that you could understand any of the frustration and difficulty coming to terms with a sexual identity that is unpopular in the country and time I was born into. How dare you tell me that I am not allowed to have a union with the same rights as heterosexual marriage because of some misguided, antiquated belief. How dare you come into my guild, my forums, a place where I can rely on people liking me for who I am, not who I sleep with, and stand on your soapbox and stir up trouble where it isn't needed or welcome.

    I'd personally gkick you the moment I got home if I felt it would stick.

  5. The Jet Program application process is undoubtedly a competitive one; however, I possess three strong qualities that would make me an ideal fit for the position of Assistant Language Teacher (ALT): a strong background in the language and culture of Japan, a history of successful teaching and work experiences, and a strong desire to participate in the program’s goal of internationalization.

    I hope to be accepted into the program in order to help me continue my study and appreciation of the rich Japanese culture, and bring first hand knowledge back to my community here in South Carolina. I began studying Japanese language as an undergraduate student. After enrolling, I discovered not only a challenging, rewarding language, but also a fascinating culture that I was determined to learn more about. As a result, I joined the school’s Japanese club, participated in several culture fairs, and on several occasions led groups of visiting students from Japan around Charleston. Inspired by what I had learned, I became president of that organization. If accepted, living and teaching in Japan and being fully immersed in Japanese would only increase my understanding of both the language and culture, something I want to bring back to the United States with me. I believe the knowledge and appreciation from study that I have achieved would help me make a smooth transition to a Japanese lifestyle, although I’m sure my outsider’s viewpoint could stand a few hands-on corrections. My experience as a leader with our Japanese club would help me as a teacher, having helped hone my skills in working with many students on large scale projects.

    My experiences as a teacher and working professional have helped build a solid foundation for intellectual curiosity and leadership that I would bring to Japan with me. While working on my degree in mathematics, I spent two years tutoring students both at my school’s center for student learning and as a volunteer. The time I spent tutoring was immensely rewarding, and sparked my desire to teach. I know that having experience in teaching would give me an advantage as an ALT.

    Aside from my time spent as a tutor, I also have experience as a working professional. After graduation, I took a job with the United States Department of State, where I am currently employed. Although not a teaching job, the Department’s mission statement is “Diplomacy,” an ideal that is essential to the JET Program. This job has prepared me to work in a professional environment, has taught me how to relate to people form various backgrounds, and would serve as a good foundation for a career not only in teaching, but also in international relations. If accepted as an ALT, my educational background in tutoring coupled with my professional experience as an employee of the Department of State would enhance my ability to be an effective educator to my students as well as a committed, empathetic colleague to my peers.

    My biggest hope lies in the opportunity to participate in a cultural exchange such as the one unique to the JET Program. Being placed at a local school would allow me to broaden my view of life in Japan and, conversely, to present aspects of my own life here in the USA to the students. Additionally, I hope to bring back an impression of Japan’s unique culture to the United States, and continue to share my passions at home once the assignment has ended. Already possessing a basic understanding of the language would put me at an advantage in communicating with students, peers, and supervisors, both in and out of the school setting. In these ways, I feel that I could truly become a local ambassador and realize the program’s goal of cultural interaction.

    My on-going interest in Japanese language and culture would make an enthusiastic and dedicated ALT. My professional background as both a tutor and employee of the United States government would serve me well as I strive to form meaningful, professional relationships with both future students and colleagues. My genuine interest in Japan, from language to customs, would help bring a piece of the United States to Japan, and a piece of Japan back to the States upon my return.
